What may appear to be a rather out-of-place rabbit (given the hostile surroundings) may turn out to be a deadly Caerbannog. Identified by their red eyes, Caerbannog are otherwise visually identical to normal bunnies found on world surfaces - until they attack.

Caerbannog are hostile to travellers and deal contact damage. They also possess a horizontal leaping attack across several tiles, where they expose jaws of sharp teeth as they close the distance. Unusually, Caerbannogs generate Madness as pickups as they attack, which can be a boon for Metaphysics research.

In combat, their small size makes them easy to go unnoticed, and combined with their speedy jumps can make them rather difficult to hit. NPC crew members and guards may have difficulty landing hits on the Caerbannog as ranged weapons may miss while melee weapons whiff as the monster leaps through them, and having more bodies for the Caerbannog to hit also leads to higher amounts of Madness pickups being produced. Their surprisingly high damage and ability to generate massive amounts of Madness if left unchecked can also make exploration hazardous.

Caerbannogs have been sighted on Proto Worlds, Chromatic and Rainforest planets.

Tips

  • If one would rather avoid the Caerbannog while exploring or spelunking, it is easily done by baiting it to pounce laterally at the player and then boxing it up with blocks. Its tiny size makes it quick to trap in this manner.
  • Caerbannogs are not capturable.

Notes

  • Caerbannog is an obvious reference to the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog (often known simply as the Killer Rabbit) from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The description of Caerbannog (visible via Monster Inspector) references the heaps of bones around the rabbit in the film.
    • 'Killer Rabbit' is in turn a cultural metaphor for something that is highly dangerous despite outwardly appearing harmless.
  • The Caerbannog is also, terrifyingly, immune to the following: Bio-ooze, slime, and lava. Additionally, the Caerbannog possesses a minor natural healing ability, capable of mending its own wounds and regenerating with time.
  • Given the unique jumping animation of the Caerbannog, it can at times get stuck floating in midair for several feet while pursuing a foe. This can result in its lack of ability to climb or preform an additional jump.
