A Dead Animal is a creepy EPP augment obtained from Kevin as a quest reward.
At some point after starting to wear it, a friendly ghost cat will haunt you. The more damage you are taking from enemies, the faster it will happen. This includes damage you healed afterwards (there is no need to stay at low hitpoints to get this event). The needed damage range is about 200-1000+.
The cat follows you as a pet would (but doesn't count towards the pet limit), providing healing aura to you and your allies. The cat despawns after a few seconds.
